AA-LF DONATES AMBULANCE TO PARTNER PENTECOST HOSPITAL

 GHANA SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH AA-LF, SO-SU ÅRHUS  TO PROMOTE THE WELFARE OF THE ELDERLY

The Ministries of Health and Gender, Children and Social Protection have committed to an agreement with the Aarhus Social Health Care College from Denmark with its local partner “Akrowa Aged-Life Foundation” to promote the welfare of the elderly in Ghana. The agreement will ensure cooperation between the parties in the areas of elder-care, rehabilitation, and welfare technology.

 The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) also comes with an opportunity for training of Ghanaian Doctors in Geriatrics and a sponsorship for Ghanaian Student-Doctors and nurses to be trained as Geriatric Specialists in Denmark. Lecturers in geriatrics would also come to Ghana to train geriatric specialists in Ghana Medical Training Institutes.
The agreement further means that,the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons as well as the Ghana College of Nurses will incorporate geriatric care in postgraduate medical and nursing education while Geriatric Departments are established in District Health facilities. In his remarks, a Deputy Minister for Gender Children and Social Protection, John Alexander Ackon noted that,the neglect of the aged is a neglect of 6.7 percent of the aged in Ghana and 20 percent of the world’s aged population by the year 2050, adding that, Ghana has only one geriatrician at present in spite of the number of the elderly in the country. Thus based on the 2010 Population and Housing Census by the Ghana Statistical Service which indicates that the population of persons 60 years and above constitutes 1, 643,381 of the total population. Mr Ackon stated that, the agreement with Denmark is the first of various actions initiated by government to develop the needed capacity, structures and processes to address the health care needs of the elderly in Ghana.
